Introduction of Low-Temperature Lithium Battery

It is not recommended to directly charge common lithium batteries in sub-zero environments.

In a cold environment below 0℃, lithium battery electrolyte viscosity rises and the conductivity decreases, resulting in a decrease in the movement of lithium ions.

Charging will cause lithium ions to gather together at the negative electrode (anode), which will lead to lithium-ion metallization at the negative electrode, we call it “plating”. This results in less active lithium ions in the battery, and thus less available capacity. In more severe cases, it may cause the lithium metal to pierce the separator and short-circuit the battery internally.

In the battery working conditions, such as outdoor or no temperature-controlled room, there are still the demands of charging below 0℃. Therefore, the following types of low-temperature lithium batteries could be useful in the conditions below 0℃.

Self-Heating Battery

Self-heating battery uses an internal temperature control system and a self-heating pad to adjust the temperature. When the temperature falls below 0℃( can be set ), the battery system enables the heater to start working and bring the temperature back above 5℃ to reach the required temperature for charging.

This solution has little increase in cost, is ideal for temperatures around -10℃.
